Google Pixel 9: AI-Powered Features, Camera Upgrades, and the Latest Specs
Everything about the new Google Pixel 9 phones, including AI features, camera upgrades, and more.
Google launches its first AI-powered smartphone. They introduce three flat-screen phones and a foldable device. First of all, they said the Pixel 9 series has a sleek, comfortable design with an updated camera bar that's situated in front and center. They also boast about their luxurious finishes with a silky matte glass back and polished metal sides that give them a high-end feel according to the official website.
There are three different models of the Pixel 9.
Pixel 9
Display: The 6.3-inch Actua OLED display is indeed 35% brighter than the Pixel 8's, reaching up to 2,700 nits peak brightness.
Cameras: The main camera setup includes a 50MP wide lens and a significant upgrade to a 48MP ultrawide camera, up from 12MP on the Pixel 8. The front camera now features autofocus for sharper selfies.
Battery Life: The Pixel 9's battery life is approximately 20% longer than that of the Pixel 8 during active use
Pixel 9 Pro Models
Sizes: The Pixel 9 Pro comes in two sizes: a 6.3-inch model and a larger 6.8-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL. Both models feature the "Super Actua" display, which is the brightest in the lineup with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.
Cameras: Both Pro models share the same camera specs, including a new 42MP front camera for improved low-light selfies. (42MP Dual PD, f/2.2, 103-degree FOV)
Pixel 9 Pro Fold
Display: The inner display of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has been upgraded to a peak brightness of 2,700 nits, which is a substantial improvement over the original Pixel Fold's 1,450 nits.
Pricing and Availability: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is priced at $1,799 and will start shipping on September 4th.
Google Tensor G4
According to NanoReview and Android Authority, Google Tensor G4 is an 8-core chipset and is manufactured using a 4-nanometer process technology. It has eight cores: 1 core of Cortex-X4 at 3.1 GHz, 3 cores of Cortex-A720 at 2.6 GHz, and 4 cores of Cortex-A520 at 1.92 GHz. Its GPU is Mali-G715 MP7 940MHz that's I guess the same seven-core setup as the previous generation chipset.
The Pixel 9 series is powered by the Tensor G4 chip developed in collaboration with Google DeepMind. It's optimized for running advanced AI models like Gemini Nano that can process things like text, images, and audio. The Pixel 9 has 12GB of RAM, while the Pro models come with 16GB of RAM.
Pixel Studio
This is an image-generation tool that can create an image from a prompt, pretty much the familiar one that we can experience from other apps. We can use a prompt box to add or remove elements and change its mood. This is powered by Tensor G4 and the text-to-image model, Imagen 3.
Pixel Screenshots help save, organize, and quickly find important information from screenshots. The app leverages on-device Gemini Nano with Multimodality to summarize screenshots and make them searchable. According to NewsBytes, the Pixel Screenshots app can answer questions based on image content. That means if I ask about something secret that's in my gallery, it can browse through it and try to answer my question returning some images with relevant information.
Capture Stunning Photos and Videos
The Pixel 9’s camera system delivers good performance with a re-engineered imaging pipeline. AI features like Add Me ensure that everyone including the person who takes the picture is in the group photo, while the updated Panorama mode captures detailed low-light shots. Magic Editor in Google Photos lets you reframe photos and add elements. Video Boost is available on all Pro models. According to Google Help, people can make videos on their Pixel phone in higher quality and with better lighting, colors, and details. You can use the 48MP 5x telephoto to record high-resolution zoom videos to 20x with Super Res Zoom Video.
Clearer Calls and Note-Taking
Clear Calling enhances audio quality, and the new Call Notes feature provides a private summary and transcript of phone calls. It operates fully on-device to protect privacy, and everyone on the call is notified when it’s activated.
Satellite SOS: Emergency Help at Your Fingertips
Satellite SOS will be available first in the U.S. on Pixel 9 devices. It will be available at no extra cost for the first two years on Pixel 9 devices in the U.S.
